Theurgy

In the set of drawings that make up Theurgy Noppen examines the practice of rituals. In this body of work figures are shown performing different acts to invoke the presence of an extra reality. Through the geometry and light-emitting objects Noppen creates a new ethereal dimension that reveals our deeply rooted desire for transcendence.

Rituals are usually performed with the intention of invoking or achieving henosis, or ‘oneness’. The symbolism and meaning of such practices can be found in many cultures and religions, going back thousands of years. Through these works on paper, the artist creates a new realm in which he establishes a contemporary dialogue with ancient tokens, remembrances that are buried deep inside us.
