Transmutation

Created during Noppen’s residency at El Pez Soluble in Mexico in 2019, this suite consists of 6 paintings and 2 sculptures.

From his earliest childhood Noppen has been fascinated by physics and maths. After majoring in art and design in The Netherlands he went on to study physics in the UK, where his fascination for numbers and geometry developed into concrete visual concepts that now form an intrinsic part of his work. The hypercube, also known as a tesseract, is an exotic object. Noppen created his own version of this four-dimensional analogue of a cube when working together with Santiago Pani and Daniel Martin during this residency. In it his ideas about form and matter for the first time take shape in the medium of sculpture.
